The deal set a new record for the most expensive sale of a North American sports franchise as it surpassed the $6.05 billion sale of an NFL franchise, Washington Commanders, in 2023. Forbes valued the team at $6 billion in 2024, ranking them fourth among NBA franchises after the Golden State Warriors, New York Knicks, and Los Angeles Lakers.

William Chisholm is a prominent private equity executive and the co-founder of Symphony Technology Group (STG), which is from Boston. William has been a lifelong die-hard fan of the Celtics, and this deal isn’t just business for him, it’s way more than that. It’s the dream of the young William who watched the team play growing up. When Will William Chisholm Takeover The Celtics?
Wyc Grousbeck purchased the Celtics for $360 million in 2002 and has been the face of the team’s ownership for more than two decades. He will stay as the CEO and governor of the team through the 2027-28 season to ensure a smooth transition. The sale requires final approval from the NBA’s Board of Governors, but we can expect the deal closed.
