Celtics Sold: Boston’s Beloved Makes History With A $6.1 Billion Deal

The Boston Celtics have made history by becoming the most expensive franchise in the history of NBA. Read this article for full details.

The Boston Celtics, one of the most legendary franchises in NBA history, have made it to the headlines with their record-breaking sale. The deal was announced on 20 March 2025 with a private equity executive, William Chisholm, who bought it for a staggering amount of $6.1 billion.

The deal set a new record for the most expensive sale of a North American sports franchise as it surpassed the $6.05 billion sale of an NFL franchise, Washington Commanders, in 2023. Forbes valued the team at $6 billion in 2024, ranking them fourth among NBA franchises after the Golden State Warriors, New York Knicks, and Los Angeles Lakers.

Who Is William Chisholm?

William Chisholm is a prominent private equity executive and the co-founder of Symphony Technology Group (STG), which is from Boston. William has been a lifelong die-hard fan of the Celtics, and this deal isn’t just business for him, it’s way more than that. It’s the dream of the young William who watched the team play growing up. He expressed his excitement and said, ” Growing up on the North Shore and attending college in New England, I have been a die-hard Celtics fan my entire life.”

“I understand how important the Celtics are to the city of Boston – the role the team plays in the community is different than any other city in the country. I also understand that there is a responsibility as a leader of the organisation to the people of Boston, and I am up for this challenge,” he added

When Will William Chisholm Takeover The Celtics?

Wyc Grousbeck purchased the Celtics for $360 million in 2002 and has been the face of the team’s ownership for more than two decades. He will stay as the CEO and governor of the team through the 2027-28 season to ensure a smooth transition. The sale requires final approval from the NBA’s Board of Governors, but we can expect the deal closed.

The Celtics are already one of the best teams in the NBA, and this deal came at a significant time amidst the team being in the middle of a championship window. But the team is in good hands as William Chisholm is a lifelong fan and understands the importance of the team’s success.
