India Brings Back FIBA U-18 Asia Cup After 22-Year Wait, Ahmedabad Named Host
Ahmedabad will host the FIBA U-18 Asia Cup in 2026, marking India’s return as host after 22 years.
India is set to host one of Asia’s biggest youth basketball tournaments once again, with Ahmedabad officially named as the host city for the FIBA U-18 Asia Cup.
The tournament will run from August 13 to 23, 2026, marking the competition’s return to Indian soil after a gap of 22 years.
The announcement was confirmed by the FIBA Regional Office-Asia on Thursday, giving Indian basketball a major opportunity to bring continental-level action back into focus.
This will only be the third time India hosts the tournament. The country previously staged the event in Bengaluru in 2004 and Kolkata in 1998.
Direct Route to the U-19 Basketball World Cup
The 2026 edition carries extra significance because the top four teams will qualify for the FIBA Under-19 Basketball World Cup, scheduled to be held in Pardubice, Czechia, from June 26 to July 4, 2027.
Australia will enter the tournament as defending champions after winning the 2024 title in Amman, Jordan. New Zealand, runners-up in the previous edition, has also secured qualification.
The remaining teams will earn their spots through qualification tournaments held across various FIBA Asia sub-zones.
FIBA U-18 Tournament Format and Qualification Structure
The competition will feature 16 teams divided into four groups of four teams each during the round-robin stage.
The top three teams from every group will progress to the knockout rounds, setting up a packed schedule of high-stakes youth basketball matches.
Regional qualifiers for the tournament are spread across Asia:
- South Asian Basketball Association qualifiers will be held in Colombo, Sri Lanka, from May 25 to 29, 2026.
- East Asia qualifiers are scheduled in Fukuoka, Japan, from June 2 to 7.
- Southeast Asia qualifiers will take place in Krabi, Thailand, from June 10 to 14.
- Gulf Basketball Association qualifiers are set to be hosted in Doha, Qatar.
The allocation of qualification spots will depend on a mix of fixed berths and the performances of teams from each sub-zone in the 2024 edition.
Ahmedabad’s Growing Sporting Reputation
Ahmedabad has been chosen to be a host city because of its rapid rise as the premier sporting city in India.
The new Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad is one of the largest stadiums in the world (capacity: 132,000) and is a reflection of Ahmedabad’s commitment to being a successful host city for top-class sporting events.
Ahmedabad is becoming an increasingly significant city in India’s event strategy and to connect India to the aspirations for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, as well as to the country’s 2036 Olympic bid.
Hosting a major continental basketball tournament demonstrates Ahmedabad’s ability to support a variety of different types of sports.
India’s Historic Connection With the Tournament
India last hosted the tournament in Bengaluru in 2004, when the competition was still known as the FIBA Asia U18 Championship.
Iran dominated that edition by winning all eight matches before defeating Korea in the final to secure its first-ever continental basketball title in any category.
Before that, Kolkata hosted the event in 1998 in what became one of the tournament’s most memorable editions.
That competition marked the international debut of Yao Ming, who later emerged as one of Asia’s most influential basketball icons and a global NBA star. China went on to lift the title that year, adding to its record dominance in the competition.
For Indian basketball, hosting the tournament after more than two decades is a significant step.
The return of the FIBA U-18 Asia Cup gives local fans a chance to watch some of Asia’s brightest young basketball talents compete on home soil while also helping India strengthen its presence in the international basketball landscape.
