France and Japan to Host Next Basketball World Cup Editions

Basketball’s global calendar just got a major update, with FIBA confirming France and Japan as hosts for upcoming World Cup tournaments, strengthening the sport’s presence across Europe and Asia.

France to Host Men’s World Cup for the First Time

France has been awarded the men’s FIBA Basketball World Cup 2031, marking a historic first for the country. The tournament will run from August 29 to September 14, with matches scheduled across Paris, Lyon and Lille.

The final phase, including the title clash, will take place in Paris, putting the French capital at the centre of the global basketball spotlight.

This hosting right comes at a time when France is enjoying a strong run in international basketball. The team’s silver medal finish at the 2024 Summer Olympics on home soil further underlined its growing stature in the sport.

Japan to Stage Women’s World Cup in Tokyo

On the women’s side, Japan will host the 2030 edition of the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup. The tournament will be held entirely in Tokyo from November 26 to December 8.

Unlike France’s multi-city approach, Japan will go with a single-city format, a model that has proven effective for major international events in recent years. It also ensures smoother logistics and a more concentrated fan experience.

Japan’s selection reflects its continued investment in basketball and its experience in hosting global competitions, including past World Cup events.

Why FIBA Chose France and Japan

FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis pointed to the strong basketball culture in both countries as a key factor behind the decision.

Beyond infrastructure, both nations bring a unique identity and fan energy that can elevate the tournament experience. That mix of sporting quality and cultural appeal played a big role in the final call.

These decisions are part of FIBA’s broader push to grow basketball worldwide. Europe continues to be a competitive powerhouse, while Asia is rapidly emerging as a major market for the sport.
