The Miami Heat are a Miami-based American basketball team that plays professionally. The Heat are a member of the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference and play in the National Basketball Association (NBA). The team has three NBA titles to its name and has its home games at Kaseya Center.
The team debuted as an expansion squad in the 1988–89 season. When Pat Riley took over as head coach and team president in the middle of the 1990s, the Heat emerged from a spell of mediocrity. Riley orchestrated the Alonzo Mourning and Tim Hardaway deals that put the franchise in the running for the playoffs. Before leaving the team in 2001 and 2002, respectively, Mourning and Hardaway guided the Heat to four straight division victories. Success for the club also followed Dwyane’s draft selection in 2003.
The Heat, led by Wade and acquired by Riley for former NBA MVP Shaquille O’Neal, won their first NBA championship in 2006 after Riley took over as head coach for a second time. The squad struggled for the rest of the 2000s until O’Neal left two years later. Riley was still the team president, but Erik Spoelstra took over as head coach. The Heat added NBA All-Star Chris Bosh and league MVP LeBron James in 2010, completing the “Big Three” with Wade. Spoelstra, James, Wade, and Bosh guided the Heat to the NBA Finals each of their four seasons together, ending in back-to-back titles in 2012 and 2013. By 2016, all three had left, and the squad was in the process of rebuilding. 2019 saw the Heat acquire All-Star Jimmy Butler, and in 2020 and 2023 they made it back to the NBA Finals. In 2021, Kyle Lowry, a six-time NBA All-Star, was acquired by the Heat.
With 27 straight games, the Heat own the record for the third-longest winning streak in the NBA, which they set in the 2012–13 campaign. Miami boasts six Hall of Famers among its alumni, and James was the team’s two-time NBA MVP winner.
