Stephen Curry Extends Golden State Warriors Contract Until 2027

Stephen Curry signs a one-year extension with the Golden State Warriors, securing his stay until 2027 and bringing his total career earnings over $500m.

Stephen Curry has put an end to the rumors about his future by signing a one-year contract extension with the Golden State Warriors, securing his place with the team until 2027.

This new deal is reportedly valued at $62.6 million (£47.5 million), ensuring that the four-time NBA champion will earn a total of $178 million (£135 million) over the next three years. At 36, Stephen Curry, a two-time NBA Most Valuable Player, will join the ranks of NBA players surpassing $500 million in career earnings, alongside LeBron James, Paul George, and Kevin Durant.

By the end of this contract, Curry’s career earnings will reach approximately $532 million (£403 million), making him the second-highest earner in NBA history, trailing only James, who has amassed $580 million.

Stephen Curry has spent his entire NBA career with the Warriors since being drafted as the seventh overall pick in 2009. This season, the 10-time NBA All-Star will be without his long-time teammate Klay Thompson. Despite Curry’s efforts to keep him, Golden State failed to agree on a new contract with Thompson, ending his 13-year tenure with the Warriors as he departed for the Dallas Mavericks in free agency.

Of the core group that contributed to the Warriors’ NBA title wins, only Stephen Curry and Draymond Green remain. They are now tasked with leading the team into a new era, focusing more on developing younger players after missing the play-offs last season.

Curry’s Unique Value to the Warriors

Stephen Curry has transformed the way basketball is played. He and Thompson earned the nickname ‘Splash Brothers’ due to their exceptional three-point shooting skills. However, Curry has always been the bigger threat. Despite his relatively modest height of 6 feet 2 inches, his precision from three-point range has set a new standard, making it essential for players in all positions to be capable of shooting—and defending against—three-point shots.

In 2022, Stephen Curry became the NBA’s all-time leader in three-pointers made, with his current tally standing at 3,747. That year, the Warriors secured their fourth NBA championship in eight years, marking what many viewed as Curry’s crowning achievement.

Two years later, Curry’s performance shows no sign of decline. Last season, he averaged 26.4 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game, with a shooting accuracy of 45% overall and 40.8% from three-point range. He led the league in three-point field goals for the eighth time in his career, with 357 made in a single season—the third-highest total ever. Stephen Curry holds the record for the most three-pointers in a season, with 402 in the 2015-16 season.

Additionally, Stephen Curry led the league in crucial statistics during the final minutes of games last season, topping the charts for points (189), three-pointers (32), and field goals made (59).

At this year’s Summer Olympics in Paris, Stephen Curry further cemented his legacy by becoming only the fifth NBA player to win at least four NBA championships, two MVP awards, and an Olympic gold medal, joining the elite group that includes LeBron James, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, and Bill Russell.
