LeBron James Eyes Another NBA Record, Becomes 4th Player to Hit 12,000 Assists

LeBron James becomes the fourth player in NBA history to reach 12,000 assists, adding another milestone to his legendary career with the Lakers.

LeBron James continues to stretch the limits of longevity, and on Friday night, the Los Angeles Lakers superstar added yet another historic milestone to his already unmatched résumé.

During a home game against the Phoenix Suns, James became just the fourth player in NBA history to register 12,000 career assists. The milestone came early in the game, with his second assist of the first quarter.

It wasn’t just any routine play. James secured a defensive rebound and instantly launched a long, accurate chest pass across the court. DeAndre Ayton finished the move at the rim over Collin Gillespie, sealing the historic moment with 7:49 still left in the opening quarter.

LeBron James Joins Elite Company in NBA History

With this success, LeBron James will be part of a select few who have had long careers as the all-time assist leader, with other members of this club including John Stockton (15,806), Chris Paul (12,552), and Jason Kidd (12,091).

With James moving into fourth place in the history of assists, getting highly positioned on the all-time list does not seem to be impossible. If James continues to play through this season, he is very close to being able to catch Jason Kidd within the next few years, but whether he will be able to pass Chris Paul will depend on his health and how many games he plays over the next few years.

LeBron James Still Delivering at 41

At 41, James is not just adding numbers; he is still influencing games at an elite level. He entered Friday’s contest averaging 7.1 assists per game in his 59th appearance of the 2025–26 season.

The average number of assists (7.4) accumulated during LeBron’s career reflects consistently excellent playmaking ability. Continuing to score at or near the top among all NBA players throughout his career is what makes this amazing.

Stats do tell a story about LeBron James’ development as an athlete and performer. Most stars are accomplished in one area (either scoring or assisting), however, LeBron has built an amazing history of performing at an exceptional level in both areas throughout his 20-year career.

The bigger question now is not whether he will climb higher on the assists list, but how far he can go. Passing Kidd seems inevitable. Closing the gap on Paul will be tougher, while Stockton’s record still looks distant.

For now, LeBron James remains exactly what he has been for years: a player who continues to shape the game, and a career that keeps finding new ways to make history.
