Over the years, the format has evolved to maintain fan interest and engagement. In a breakthrough announcement, the format is being changed to USA vs World. Let’s take a look at what it is.

Following the disappointing reception of the 2025 mini-tournament format, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver announced a significant change for the All-Star Game 2026.

He said, “Next year, under our new media deal, the All-Star Game will return to NBC, coinciding with the Winter Olympics. The game will air on NBC, and the Winter Olympic events will serve as the lead-in. The All-Star Game will take place in the afternoon instead of the evening, followed by more Olympic events. It’s the perfect opportunity to showcase a USA versus the World format. I’m not exactly sure what the format will be yet. We paid a lot of attention to the NHL’s approach, which was very successful.”

The new USA vs World format pits the top American NBA players against the best international stars from the rest of the globe. This format aims to revive the competitive edge of the All-Star Game by pitting the national pride and international rivalry, similar to the NHL’s successful approach with its international competition.
