The Denver Nuggets are a Denver-based American basketball team that plays professionally. The Nuggets are a member of the Northwest Division of the Western Conference and play in the National Basketball Association (NBA). The team was established in 1967 as a charter franchise of the American Basketball Association (ABA) under the name Denver Larks, but prior to the start of the inaugural season, they changed to the Rockets. In 1974, the Rockets rebranded themselves as the Nuggets. The Nuggets competed for the final ABA Championship championship in 1976 following their name change, but they were defeated by the New York Nets.

The team has experienced considerable success; during the ABA’s existence, they have qualified for the playoffs each season, although they were defeated by the New York Nets in the 1976 ABA Finals. Following the ABA-NBA merger, the franchise entered the NBA in 1976. From 2004 to 2013, they qualified for the NBA playoffs ten times in a row, and they qualified for the playoffs nine times in a row in the 1980s. The Nuggets, under the leadership of Nikola Jokić and Jamal Murray, made it to their first NBA Finals in 2023 and won their first NBA title by defeating the Miami Heat. The Nuggets were the second ABA team to win an NBA title (after the San Antonio Spurs) and the last of the four remaining teams to make it to the NBA Finals. The Colorado Mammoth of lacrosse and the Colorado Avalanche of hockey both play their home games at Ball Arena, which is shared by the Nuggets and both leagues (NLL and NHL).
