Based in Charlotte, North Carolina, the Charlotte Hornets are an American professional basketball club. The Hornets are a member of the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference and play in the National Basketball Association (NBA). The Spectrum Center in Uptown Charlotte is where the team plays its home games.
George Shinn founded the Charlotte Hornets franchise in 1988 as an expansion team. Shinn relocated the Hornets to New Orleans in 2002 as an expansion franchise. Up until 2013, when they adopted the New Orleans Pelicans as their new name, they played as the Hornets.
In accordance with a deal with the NBA, Charlotte made a comeback as the Charlotte Bobcats for the 2004–05 NBA season.11] The Bobcats declared in 2013 that starting with the 2014–15 season, they would change their name to the Charlotte Hornets. The club recaptured the records and history of the original Charlotte Hornets, which ran from 1988 to 2002, on the day the name change became effective. Consequently, the league views the Hornets as having halted operations retroactively from 2002 to 2004.
It was revealed in August 2023 that a consortium of financiers headed by Rick Schnall and Gabe Plotkin had acquired a controlling interest in the Hornets. Michael Jordan, a former NBA player and member of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, was in charge of the squad up to that point.
